Does God Need Me?
I have always wanted to live on a large piece of property, and live in a self-sustainable homestead way. Raise my own animals, grow my own vegetables and fruit, etc. It seems like an inner passion to be able to live off of the land, and not be dependent on anyone else.
The problem is that no matter how self-sustainable I may become, I am always 100% dependent on God. I am willing to bet that most of us would give a big “AMEN” to this. However, when it comes to placing this worldview into practice, some of us kind of drift away.
Lately, I have been wrestling with my own emotions when it comes to my ministry, my family, friends, etc.
God is self-sustainable in every sense of its meaning. He is not dependent on anyone or anything in order to fulfill His will. In order to need something means that the action cannot be attained without a separate outside source fulfilling another action. This goes against the sovereignty and self-sustainability of God.
When we feel that this person or group of people will not come to know Christ without me telling them, then our view of God’s sovereignty is off. What we are really saying is “God is dependent on us to save people.” I know that this is not what many of us mean, but it is what it sounds like. This type of thought process is what I have been wrestling with, in different areas of my life, since my cancer diagnosis.
Here are a few Biblical examples of God providing a way that is outside the power of man.
Noah: God provided the safe passage through the ark
Moses: God provided the safe passage across the Red Sea
Naaman: God provided the way for the leprosy to be healed
Abraham: God provided the lamb for the sacrifice
Here is the key, God would still be God if the ark was not built, the children of Israel didn’t cross the Red Sea, leprosy wasn’t healed, and there was no lamb to sacrifice. God was not dependent on these miracles for His existence or to fulfill His will. God is not dependent on us to share the Gospel.
Make no mistake about it, God want us to be involved in His work. Our love for Him should naturally spur us to share the Gospel in our everyday life. God gave us New Creation Ministries as an avenue to serve Him at motels. God wants us to be involved in His work. This work that we all do should be done out of an overflow of our love for God. Not because God is dependent on us. He is still the one that convicts, justifies, regenerates, redeems, and saves. God is the one that saves. “If anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to the one you received, let him be accursed.” (Galatians 1:9)
